Rock
This performance piece was derived from an exploration of how virtual reality replicates our physical reality. In its first iteration, Rock was created by taking a screenshot of a 3D game asset of a rock model and then printing it onto a form that I could easily hide behind. Then the rock was applied in a natural environment to test its authenticity. The facade of the digital rock becoming real was only discredited once it was revealed that I was hidden behind it.
Now I am revisiting this piece with an entirely new and hopefully more convincing approach. This time I created a 3D model of a rock that roughly fits my shape when I am in child’s pose, unwrapped the UVs and textured the model, then took that texture that would normally be applied to the 3D model of the rock and instead applied it to a blanket that I had printed at Walmart. It is my goal to be able to take this blanket anywhere, cover myself, and become a rock.
